Appendix 9 Traditional Chinese medicine: pulse diagnosis
Aside from the aforementioned, the pulse may be felt on three levels: superficial, middle and deep, pertaining to the force of pressure applied to the wrist on palpation.1
| PULSE DEPTH | ENERGY LEVEL | ORGANS |
|---|---|---|
| Superficial | Exterior | Heart and lungs |
| Middle | Stomach and spleen | Stomach and spleen |
| Deep | Interior | Kidneys and liver |
A further differential diagnosis on a simple pulse technique is the pulse separated into three pulse positions—front, middle and rear—with the former position closest to the hand.1
| PULSE POSITION | BODY POSITION | ORGANS |
|---|---|---|
| Front | Upper | Heart and lungs |
| Middle | Middle | Stomach and spleen |
| Rear | Lower | Kidneys and liver |
| PULSE DEPTH | ENERGY LEVEL | ORGANS |
|---|---|---|
| Superficial | Exterior | Heart and lungs |
