Neurofibroma. Soft, skin-colored nodule on the mid-plantar skin of a child.

Lipoma. Soft, subcutaneous nodule unattached to the overlying skin.

CLINICAL FEATURES

Neurofibromas are soft, easily inverted skin-colored to brown papules or nodules that may occur anywhere on the skin. A large plaque-like neurofibroma (plexiform neurofibroma) is occasionally seen.

Cutaneous neurofibromas may occur as solitary lesions or may be associated with neurofibromatosis.

Solitary lesions when present early in life may precede the other features of neurofibromatosis. Usually, café-au-lait macules occur first, neurofibromas later in childhood.

Lipomas are soft, subcutaneous nodules unattached to the overlying skin. They usually do not occur until adolescence. The neck, upper chest, and arms are the predominant locations. The angiolipoma variant of lipoma may be painful.

TREATMENT

Surgical excision is the only treatment option, but should be used judiciously.
