Learning objectives

• recognise how DeFCAM can be applied to CAM practice

• explain how evidence-based practice can be integrated into CAM practice
• recognise the level and quality of evidence for specific CAM interventions in particular health disorders.

Chapter overview

The first part of this book discussed the theoretical foundations of the decision-making framework for complementary and alternative medicine (DeFCAM). In this final chapter, the reader will be guided through a number of hypothetical cases to better understand how each stage of DeFCAM can be applied in clinical practice and how evidence-based practice can be integrated into CAM care.

Introduction

The conditions described in this chapter are disorders that often present in CAM practice. The format for each of these conditions is the same – it begins with a general description of the disorder, which is followed by a representative case of that condition. Each case is structured around the six stages of DeFCAM, including rapport, clinical assessment, CAM diagnosis, planning, application and review. Most of these stages are self-explanatory, except for the application stage. In keeping with the need for rigour and transparency in evidence-based practice, the methodology of the application section is described below.
