Aphthous ulcers
Minor aphthous ulcer with red border in a child’s mouth.
Painful aphthous ulcer on side of tongue.
Large painful ulcer on side of tongue in child with complex aphthosis and vaginal lesions.
Aphthous ulcer on tip of tongue of child with periodic fever (FAPA) syndrome.
CLINICAL FEATURES
Aphthae are recurrent, tender, shallow 1–10-mm erosions of the oral mucosa and lips including gums, tongue, palate and buccal mucosa. They have a yellow-gray base surrounded by a red zone. Healing occurs in 7 to 10 days without scarring.
TREATMENT
For major aphthae colchicine has been effective.
