1The addition of “agreed to by the patient” distinguishes the definition of medication adherence from medication compliance. The concept of medication compliance has fallen out of favor because it views the provider from the perspective of an authoritarian who dictates treatment rather than a provider who makes decisions that consider the patient’s preferences and values.
