Hypernatraemia

The normal serum sodium level is 135–145 mmol/L. Hypernatraemia refers to a serum sodium level>145 mmol/L.

Symptoms and Signs

Thirst usually occurs when the plasma sodium rises by 3–4 mmol/L above the upper limit of normal. Severe symptoms such as coma, seizures, muscular tremor and rigidity arise when the level is above 158 mmol/L.
